How to Sell Beauty Products Online and on Social Media (Ethically)

Selling online can widen your reach beyond friends and family, but it comes with rules. Here's how to do it well.

Follow the rules first

  • Disclose your connection. When you post about products you sell, make it clear you're a representative and earn from sales (for example "I'm an independent rep and earn from sales"). The FTC's endorsement guidance applies to social media.
  • No income or health claims. Don't promise earnings to recruits, and don't make medical claims about cosmetics ("cures acne," "removes wrinkles permanently").
  • Read your company's social media and advertising policy. Many restrict using company logos, running ads on the brand name, or selling on marketplaces.
  • Respect trademarks. Use the company's name to say who you sell for. Don't create accounts or domains that look like the official company.

Content that helps rather than spams

  • Short tutorials: a 5-minute everyday look, a skincare routine for dry winter skin.
  • Honest swatches in natural light, with shade names.
  • Seasonal gift guides with clear price ranges from the current brochure.
  • Answering common questions: shade matching, ingredients, how to use a product.

Customer care that builds repeat orders

  • Follow up after delivery to check shade and satisfaction.
  • Keep a simple customer list (preferences, skin type, last order) with their permission.
  • Reminders when favorites are likely running low, if they've opted in.
  • Make returns easy within the company's policy.

What to avoid

  • Adding people to groups without asking.
  • Mass direct messages to old contacts.
  • Posting only "join my team" content.
  • Before/after photos you didn't take or don't have rights to.
